Comparison of Online Sensors for Liquid Phase Hydrogen Sulphide Monitoring in Sewer Systems

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) related to wastewater in sewer systems is known for causing significant problems of corrosion and odor nuisance. Sewer severely affected by H2S typically rely on online gas sensors monitoring control. However, these only provide information about the emission potential at point being monitored, which sometimes inadequate design control measures. In this study, a comparison three market-ready capable liquid-phase detection was assessed compared. Two are based UV/Vis spectrophotometry, while other adapted principles Clark-type electrochemical microsensor. The measurements were statistically compared standard laboratory method first. Following that, performance evaluated under realistic conditions using Berlin Water Company (BWB) research pilot plant. Test applications representing scenarios typical concentrations found sulfide-affected sewers during measures simulated. spectrometers showed that highly dependent calibration type used deriving function. sensor high sensitivity responding alternating anaerobic/anoxic simulated nitrate dosing.
